62nd Festival of Sport Commences

Organized by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (the Federation) and subvented by Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the annual mega sport event – 62nd Festival of Sport (FOS) Opening Ceremony was successfully held today (5 April) at the Kowloon Park.

Dr. Karl C. KWOK, MH, Chairperson of Festival of Sport Organizing Committee, Ms. Michelle LI, JP, Director of Leisure & Cultural Services, Mr. Ronnie M. C. WONG, JP, Hon. Secretary General of the Federation, Hon. MA Fung-kwok, SBS, JP, Legislative Councilor, Mr. TONG Wai Lun, BBS, JP, Vice-Chairperson of Festival of Sport Organizing Committee and Mr. IP Ngo Tung, Chris, JP, Chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council officiated the Opening Ceremony to celebrate the commencement of FOS this year. The Ambassadors of 62nd FOS, including Mr. AU Ching Ming (Squash), Ms. CHOI Yan Yin (Triathlon), Mr. LEE Chi Wo Daniel (Triathlon) and Ms. MOK Uen Ying Juanita (Wushu) were invited to share their sporting experience and to promote the “Sport for All” message to the public.

Dr. KWOK said in the speech, “‘Sport for All’ has always been one of the goals of the Federation. Through the positive images of the FOS Ambassadors and outstanding performances by the Hong Kong athletes, public are being motivated to enjoy sport not only by watching but also by practicing.” He hopes people can find out which sport they are interested in through this Carnival and subsequently develop a healthy lifestyle.

The 62nd Festival of Sport is held during April to May this year. The 3-day FOS Carnival cum Opening Ceremony held at the Kowloon Park to kick off the event. The programme of the Carnival not only included Sports Trial and Demonstration, but also Workshops and Exhibition of Olympic History in Hong Kong. All activities aimed at encouraging active participation of the public for free to have a foretaste of different sports. In addition, Lucky Draw will be held to enhance the atmosphere of the event. Besides, the Presentation Ceremony of SF&OC Incentive Awards & Junior Incentive Awards 2018 was held during the Opening Ceremony. The Federation presented cash incentives from its savings to its Member Associations to recognise the outstanding performance and achievements of Hong Kong athletes in Multi-sports Games and World / Asian Championships.

For this edition of the awards, a total sum of HK$2,536,020 including HK$1,726,700 for Incentive Awards, and HK$809,320 for Junior Incentive Awards was granted to 42 Member Associations. For the list of award recipients, please refer to the Appendix.

About 62nd Festival of Sport

The FOS is one of the Mega Sport Events organized by the Federation to promote the concept of “Sport for All” and this year is the 62nd edition of the event. Throughout April to May 2019, over 60 diversified sports events suitable for the public in all ages are ongoing with more than 60 Sports Associations’ co-organization, aiming to encourage Hong Kong people to participate in sports activity and develop a healthy lifestyle.
